Matias Ferreira | Double Amputee Police Officer + USMC Veteran

Matias served in the United States Marine Corps as a Machine Gunner with 1st Battalion 8th Marines 2nd Marine Division, stationed in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. 

In his first combat tour to Helmand Province, Afghanistan in 2010, he stepped on an IED causing him to lose both legs below the knees, amongst other injuries.

During his year and a half of rehabilitation at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, he competed in numerous races to include the Navy 5 Miler, Army 10 Miler, Marine Corps Marathon, Detroit Marathon, and New York City Marathon.

He is currently an active Police Officer with the Suffolk County Police Department in Suffolk County, New York; making him our nation’s first Double Amputee Patrolman.

In his spare time he likes to use his injury as a platform to motivate other amputees to continue to follow their passions regardless of their injury or situation.

He’s a father, patriot, and friend of O2X.
