Meet James: Firefighter and this week's Featured Tactical Athlete
What got you into your profession?
I grew up on a farm in England. My dad was a veterinarian so I was around medicine and physical labor throughout my childhood. I worked as a stuntman for a few years which brought me to America. The fire service had been a childhood dream but a misdiagnosis of color blindness had led me to believe I was ineligible. Once in America, I was able to realize my dream and spend 14 years in departments on both the East and West coasts.
What motivates you?
There is no better motivator than knowing that lives truly depend on your preparation. Whether it’s physical preparation, skills training or knowledge of medical protocols, complacency kills. One the other side of the coin, this also applies to departments. Three and a half years ago, after seeing the mental and physical ill health in our profession, I started the Behind the Shield Podcast. The goal is to bring the greatest minds in physical and mental wellness to the first responders and military of the world.
Know someone who we should feature as a tactical athlete of the week?
