David Meyer
Dr. David Meyer is an O2X Resilience Specialist and licensed psychologist specializing in PTSD and trauma. Before entering psychology, he spent 14 years in fire and EMS, serving as a wildland firefighter, EMT, engine foreman, and helicopter rappeller with the US Forest Service, including time with the Jackson Helitack crew. That firsthand experience in high-stakes environments gave him an intimate understanding of the unique pressures first responders face — knowledge that continues to inform his clinical work today.
Dr. Meyer earned his Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of South Dakota, specializing in Disaster Psychology through the Disaster Mental Health Institute. During his training, he deployed with the American Red Cross Disaster Mental Health Team and worked with the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center in Thailand. He completed his internship at the Salem, Virginia VA and his postdoctoral fellowship through the Boston VA Healthcare System and Boston University, where he served as project director of a NIMH-funded longitudinal study examining risk and resilience factors in firefighter recruits across the US and Canada.
Dr. Meyer went on to spend five years on the PTSD Clinical Treatment Team at the Maine VA Healthcare System, providing trauma-focused treatment to military service members, veterans, and first responders. Today he owns Health Psych Maine, a group practice in Waterville, Maine, where he treats PTSD, helps clients manage stress, and conducts wellness consults with law enforcement and fire personnel. He brings a rare combination of field experience and clinical expertise to this work — having lived the job himself, he understands the culture, the operational demands, and the barriers that can keep first responders from seeking help. His approach pairs that practical understanding with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and other empirically supported treatments. He has consulted with multiple law enforcement agencies, fire departments, and corrections facilities and was featured in the Maine Public Broadcasting documentary A Matter of Duty.
In his free time, Dr. Meyer enjoys exploring the outdoors with his wife and two daughters, running, carpentry, and making maple syrup.
